The use of citronella as a natural insect repellant dates back to the early 1900s. Our take on the classic citronella candle has a modern twist and is designed to not only be less intense but also less obtrusive than its bulky, galvanized-tin dwelling predecessors. Our candles are derived from a base of American made eco-soya wax and incorporate a blend of natural essential oils all proven to have insect repelling properties. Citronella, Lemon Myrtle, Cedarwood and Rose Geranium are all combined into a delicate citrus-driven scent that works as well indoors as in the garden. The candles are poured into Duralex Arome tempered glass jars that can be rinsed out and reused after the candle is spent.

Citronella's properties as a mosquito repellent were discovered by chance during the early 20th century when it was used as a hairdressing fragrance. In recent decades, its efficacy as a repellent applied worn on the skin has been refuted due to the fact that it evaporates quickly and is typically required in large quantities in order to be effective. It is however, still frequently used in candles to help keep mosquitos away – often while dining alfresco.
What we love about our smaller version is that they are less aggressive in fragrance while still being effective as a repellent. We use a few of these at (or around) the table and find that they add a lot of ambience without needing to be industrial-sized. The Duralex Arome jars are an extremely versatile container that can be reused to serve coffee, preserves or even small baked desserts. The glass is tempered so they are chip, impact and heat resistant.
